Application Requirements
The Admissions Committee will not review applications until all admissions requirements have been fulfilled. Applicants submitting their materials by the priority deadlines will be notified of their admission decision by March. IIT Architecture cannot be held responsible if, for any reason, the student fails to receive a decision letter in time to enroll for a particular term.

General Application Requirements
- Official Transcripts: Must indicate degrees awarded, course titles, credit hours, and grades from all attended institutions. Transcripts need an original signature and seal and must be issued within a year of the application date. Final official transcripts must be submitted within 30 days of the first day of classes.
- Letter of Recommendation: One letter is required from individuals who can assess your academic and career achievements. Submit through the Applicant Portal.
- Portfolio: Demonstrating design and visual language skills in a PDF of no more than 15 pages and 15 MB. Advanced standing applicants must show exceptional skills and experience.
- Professional Statement: Describing your motivations, goals, and special topics of study for graduate work at IIT.
- Research Statement: Required for only for M.S.Arch. applicants, outlining research interests.
International Application Requirements
In addition to the general requirements, international applicants must provide:
- English Translations: Certified translations for transcripts not in English.
- English Proficiency Exam Scores: TOEFL or IELTS scores for applicants from non-English speaking countries. Minimum scores are 600/90 (TOEFL) or 6.5 (IELTS) for unconditional admission.
- Financial Affidavit of Responsibility (FAR): Covering full program costs for one academic year.
- Copy of Passport Identity Page: For efficient I-20 processing.
- School Transfer Form: For F-1 visa holders transferring from another U.S. institution.
- GRE Scores: Required only for Ph.D. program applicants with minimum scores: 144 (quantitative reasoning), 153 (verbal reasoning), and 4.0 (analytical writing).
Eligibility and Prerequisites
Applicants must have completed or be on track to complete an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum B average (GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale). International applicants must possess a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. If there is uncertainty regarding the equivalency, applicants may need to have their degree evaluated by an external organization.
To be admitted without conditions to the Master of Architecture program, applicants need:
- Physics: Understanding of basic physical principles, demonstrated by completing a college-level physics course equivalent to IIT's PHYS 200.
- Mathematics: Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, demonstrated by completing a college-level mathematics course equivalent to IIT's MATH 148.
- Drawing Skills: Ability to produce freehand architectural drawings, demonstrated by completing a college-level drawing course or via portfolio submissions.
- Design Understanding: Basic design skills, demonstrated by completing a college-level design course or via portfolio submissions.
- General Studies: At least 45 semester hours outside of architectural studies.
Candidates with deficiencies must fulfill these requirements before matriculation. Non-architecture background students may need to complete an introductory studio before classes start. Advanced standing candidates with a pre-professional architecture degree will be evaluated case-by-case.
To be admitted without conditions to the Master of Landscape Architecture program, applicants need:
Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete before the start of the IIT term, an undergraduate degree from an accredited educational institution with at least a B average (GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent). International applicants must have completed, or expect to complete before the start of the IIT term, a degree which is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree. If we are unable to determine the equivalency of an international degree, applicants may be asked to have their degree evaluated by an outside organization.
To be admitted without conditions to the Master of Landscape Architecture program, an applicant is required to have prior college-level coursework in freehand drawing, biology, and earth science (geology, physical geography, or hydrology, etc.)
Candidates admitted with deficiencies in any of these prerequisites must fulfill them before matriculation. Students with a background outside of the area of architecture may be asked to complete an introductory studio prior to the start of classes. Candidates holding a pre-professional degree in architecture will be evaluated for advanced standing status on a case-by-case basis and will be notified of their specific status upon admission.
Financial Aid
Entering master’s students for the 2024–2025 academic year are eligible for scholarships up to $15,000 per year. Merit-based scholarships and fellowships are also available for outstanding candidates who apply by the priority deadline. Scholarship decisions are made by the Graduate Admissions Committee and do not require a separate application.

Applications to all graduate programs are made through the university’s graduate admissions portal. Applications for academic year 2025 are now open. Post February 1, 2025 we are accepting applications on a case-by-case basis only for Fall 2025.
