Assistant Professor
Youngjin Hwang is an Assistant Professor in the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology. His research focuses on environmental building design and technology, particularly at the intersection of architectural design and building sciences, emphasizing sustainability in the built environment.
Dr. Hwang leads the environmental building design and systems curriculum for both the Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture programs and advises Ph.D. students in the Technologies of the Built Environment track. His research expertise spans climate-adaptive building technologies, renewable energy systems, biomaterials, building simulation, and architectural design that leverages thermodynamics and renewable environmental forces.
He holds a Ph.D. in Architectural Sciences from the Center for Architecture, Science, and Ecology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea. Prior to joining Illinois Tech, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma. His research and design work have been presented at leading international and national peer-reviewed conferences in architecture and architectural engineering, including ASHRAE, IBPSA, ACSA, and EDRA, and have been widely exhibited, notably at the Tallinn Architecture Biennale, NYC Wanted Design, and the Seoul Architecture Festival.
