Michael glynn

Associate Teaching Professor, Second Year UG Studio Coordinator

Michael Glynn is an Illinois Licensed Architect, the College of Architecture’s Professional Development Officer, and a member of the teaching faculty. In his teaching position he co-directs the second year undergraduate program which is focused on dwelling design. His expertise in this area spans a career which includes his tenure as Vice President at Optima, Inc. (the office of David Hovey Sr.), and currently as Founder and President of a design","build practice.

A proud native of Chicago’s south side, and alumnus of the College of Architecture, Professor Glynn brings his lived experience to bear in teaching. When his students work on a project in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, Glynn enriches the project with his deep personal knowledge of Chicago neighborhoods. In the second year B.Arch. program, our students learn the fundamentals of building construction. Again, from the multiple perspectives of his own background as a construction manager, architect, and developer, Glynn is able to convey information and experience to students that other faculty simply can’t. And our students love him—Glynn routinely is one of our most popular instructors.

Michael, a member of the Mies van der Rohe Society and Sawyier Society is also the winner of the Universities 2024 Board of Trustees Outstanding Teaching Award. With this honor he is credited as a Professor who “is able to translate complexity—whether in philosophy or construction methods—into clear, easily understood examples.
