Kindon mills new

Visiting Assistant Professor, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Fourth Year UG Studio Coordinator

Kindon Mills has been making good design affordable for families for the duration of her career. Working in the realm of the dwelling, Kindon’s practical focus has been on providing minimal and elegant solutions to reduce both the cost and the environmental impact of building. Kindon holds a BA in literature and an M.Arch. from IIT in Architecture, with a focus on resource efficient design.

As an assistant professor in the College of Architecture, Kindon has been working in partnership to develop a comprehensive building design curriculum into a year long studio which looks carefully at both the integrated systems of the building itself and the responsibility of architects and designers to be responsive and responsible partners in the community. Using the longer format to dive deeply into questions of place, energy flows and material practices, Kindon’s work allows students to make broader connections about what we build as architects, and the social, environmental and economical equity of the work we do.

Kindon’s work in the profession focuses on the responsible use of material in building, promoting adaptive reuse and small scale remodel as alternatives to new construction. Working in the realm of housing, her work has evolved as a study of the essential elements of dwelling: actively reducing scale in each project so that the work can be achieved with less cost, less waste and less disruption to site and surrounding ecology. As a part of this work, Kindon has been exploring the craft practices historically performed by women, and how these practices (furnishings, textiles and ceramics) tie into notions of value, craft and traditional forms of making.
